What is a Bone Marrow Transplant Nurse?
Bone marrow transplant nurses are specialized oncology nurses who provide pre-transplant and post-transplant care to patients with damaged bone marrow caused by diseases like juvenile osteoporosis, leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, and anemia, among others. BMT nurses are specially trained to treat BMT patients who are at significant risk of infections and other complications and play an essential role in ensuring bone marrow donors and patients are comfortable before, during, and after procedures. The number of deaths in this patient population can be overwhelming at times, but BMT nursing remains a highly gratifying and rewarding career choice.
