Monitor techs are allied health professionals who specialize in monitoring and interpreting electrocardiograms of patients to detect irregular heartbeats, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest as it’s happening. Sometimes referred to as cardiac monitor technicians or telemetry technicians, monitor techs assist doctors and nurses in diagnosing various heart conditions. They typically perform their job by sitting at a computer outside of patients’ rooms. Although monitor techs usually don’t provide any type of medical treatment, they’re valuable members of patients’ healthcare teams and do their part to help improve patients’ lives.

Most of what monitor techs do during their workday is observe and interpret the heart monitors of patients in a hospital’s ICU and look for significant changes that could signal any issues with their hearts. They use machines and other medical technology to keep track of patients’ heart performance, watching closely for any abnormalities so they can alert their medical providers. Other job duties of monitor techs may differ based on their experience and the policies and procedures of the hospital in which they work. However, they tend to perform the same core tasks, which can include:

Monitor techs primarily work in hospitals in the intensive care or telemetry unit, but they may also be employed by institutions that specialize in cardiology, such as heart hospitals. They may also find employment at other medical care centers, clinics, and acute care facilities that provide treatments relating to heart health.

Good monitor techs have in-depth knowledge of normal heart rhythms versus different types of abnormal heart rhythms and the operation of the heart monitoring equipment used to detect these rhythms. They’re highly observant with keen attention to detail and above-average analytical skills. Successful monitor techs are skilled at multitasking as they may be charged with monitoring numerous patients simultaneously. They possess excellent critical thinking skills that allow them to react swiftly to urgent situations. Good monitor techs also have strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively document the statuses of patients and efficiently relay pertinent information to doctors and nurses.

Although monitor techs work in the medical field, becoming one doesn’t require extensive education and training. Applicants for an entry-level position need a high school diploma or equivalent and employers may require them to take a couple of classes after being hired. Monitor techs typically receive on-the-job training, so previous experience isn’t always required.

Monitor technicians may hold Basic Life Support (BLS) or Certified EKG Technician (EKG), among others.
