What is a Monitor Tech?

Monitor techs are allied health professionals who specialize in monitoring and interpreting electrocardiograms of patients to detect irregular heartbeats, arrhythmias, and cardiac arrest as it’s happening. Sometimes referred to as cardiac monitor technicians or telemetry technicians, monitor techs assist doctors and nurses in diagnosing various heart conditions. They typically perform their job by sitting at a computer outside of patients’ rooms. Although monitor techs usually don’t provide any type of medical treatment, they’re valuable members of patients’ healthcare teams and do their part to help improve patients’ lives.

What certifications are commonly held by monitor technicians?

Monitor technicians may hold Basic Life Support (BLS) or Certified EKG Technician (EKG), among others.
