MISSION STATEMENT The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public. SUMMARY The lab will be open 7 days a week, including holidays. Shifts will vary: 8, 10 and 12 hour shifts, sometimes a 4 hour shift is also needed. The ideal candidate will have at least 1 year of experience in and Ambulatory environment. Adheres to the use of unit's standard operating procedures * Delivers care using a systematic approach to achieve measurable, outcome focused, patient care; identifies, implements, and evaluates opportunities for improvement * Communicates and collaborates effectively with leaders, departments, other disciplines, staff members, patients, and families - professionalism competency * Integrates ethical principles into clinical practice * Maintains and integrates knowledge of current clinical practice and technological proficiency; provides clinically competent, compassionate, direct patient care consistent with the Professional Practice Model * Seeks opportunities to broaden knowledge relevant to the Outpatient Nurse role and healthcare through engagement in professional organizations and commitment to life-long learning Empirical Outcomes: The Outpatient Nurse is responsible for seeking out and maintaining knowledge regarding relevant empirical outcomes, including the impact of quality improvement initiatives and institutional best practices on the patient population, nursing workforce and institution, as reflected in unit and institutional metrics Diagnostic Lab job specific competencies * The outpatient nurse has the competence and competencies regarding all aspects of performing phlebotomy through a central venous access device to an adult population in the Diagnostic Lab Center. * Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills. * Has the ability to assess and educate patients and family/caregivers to ensure future care needs are met. * Develops collaborative, professional relationships with physicians and all members of the heath care team. * Specific competencies include: IV insertion and venous access device management to include dressing changes and declotting of central venous access devices; Laboratory specimen collections and blood draws from central venous access devices; Accurate administration of solutions to saline or heparin lock central venous access devices. * Management of treatment related side effects and adverse reactions; Minimizing the risk for infection among patients who are actually or potentially immunocompromised; Knowledge needed to facilitate early detection of specific side effects that lead to effective self-management of the side effect when it does occur Other duties as assigned. Graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing. All clinical nurses with less than one year of registered nurse (RN) work experience will be required to participate in the Clinical Nurse Residency Program. Current State of Texas Professional Nursing license (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Advanced Cardiac Life Support(ACLS) certification if working in the following department: ASC Post Anesthesia (600761). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) if working in the following departments: ASC Post Anesthesia (600761) or Pedi - Child & Adolescent Center (113200).
